This, I know

You were born in a year of many highs and lows

Each day, we never knew what the future would hold

People were sick and the world was sad

There was yelling and fighting, and people got mad

Your daddy and I—we stayed close to home

The outside was scary with so many unknowns

I tried to be happy as we waited to meet you

But I worried just how the world would greet you

And then you were here with your bright eyes and sweet smile

There was joy and the world went away for a while

All day and all night I held you so close

You, my sweet baby, give me great hope

There are still many troubles as you continue to grow

But you saved me from a world I used to know

The grin on your face as we start each day

Helps me find good in every way

You were born in a year that taught us so much

About love and peace and staying in touch

With those in our lives who matter the most

May we never forget what we learned from the ghosts

It’s clearer to me now more than ever before

How you were sent to me to settle the score

Of the battle I fought within my heart

To love who I am and make a new start

I pray you’ll be kind, big and strong someday

I pray you’ll know Jesus at an early age

Each day is a gift, one to never ignore

We’ll take them in stride and pray even more

Some days we’ll laugh and others we’ll cry

But don’t worry, baby, I’m here by your side

Because though every year has its highs and lows

We’ll love you forever, this I know.
